Biography

Patrick has over 10 years’ experience working as an environmental and resource management lawyer in leading firms in New Zealand (Russell McVeagh and MinterEllisonRuddWatts) and overseas (Stephenson Harwood LLP).  Over this time, he has worked on a broad range of legal matters and has appeared in the High Court, the Environment Court and in Commissioner-led hearings.  

Patrick has represented some of New Zealand’s largest companies, key infrastructure operators, local government entities, private developers and individuals.

Patrick has a broad practice with a special interest in urban development, coastal projects, farming and freshwater, climate change, and working with historic heritage.  He is based in Auckland but practises throughout New Zealand.

Patrick prides himself as being across the latest legal and policy developments and co-convenes the Law Association’s (formerly the Auckland District Law Society) Environment and Resource Management Committee.  Patrick is also a member of the Resource Management Law Association.

Outside work, Patrick enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children, and when time allows, playing golf and going fishing.

Experience

Patrick’s legal experience includes:

  • appearing before Commissioner-led hearings, and in the Environment Court and High Court;
  • advising in relation to resource consent applications, plan changes and notices of requirement;
  • advising on and appearing in the High Court on applications for judicial review;
  • providing strategic advice including on regional and national policy;
  • appearing before the Parliamentary Select Committee on proposed legislation;
  • successfully assisting clients facing enforcement action or prosecution under the Resource Management Act; and
  • experience advising clients on fast-track consenting and intensification plan changes.
